 Using Resense F/T Sensors
---------------------------

### Sensor Data: Nominal Measurement Range

### Precautions for Sensor Handle: Flex Cable

### Mechanical Integration: Screwholes

Each sensor has a nominal measurement range and an overload capacity of approx. 300 %. Beyond this point, irreversible deformation occurs, and the output can no longer be guaranteed within our specifications.

Note: This applies also to transient forces. There is no mechanical protection against overload. Overload events can be checked via the diagnostics of the Mini-Electronics. If you suspect an overload, please contact your sales representative for further steps.

The FPC is a delicate component. To ensure safe senor handling, the FPC must not be strongly pulled in a lateral or the upper direction while the sonsor body is fixed with screws. Otherwise, the load is applied to the base os the FPC, and the wiring on the FPC might snap.

Also, do not mount the product on moving parts that are bent repeatedly.

Resense 6-axis F/T sensors can be easily integrated by using its screwholes at the top and the bottom.

Precautions: Do not fully tighten one screw first. This creates an uneven preload and mechanically distorts the sensing structure. As a result, the sensor may output incorrect force/torque values or even suffer permanent damage.

  Answering Questions - FAQ
---------------------------

##### Do Resense force/torque sensors require a heat-up time?

Thanks to their silicon-based sensing technology, our force/torque sensors are significantly less sensitive to temperature variations. However, to ensure maximum measurement stability and accuracy, we recommend a heat-up time of approximately 30 minutes before performing critical measurements.

[Discover More](https://www.resense.io/fileadmin/resense/Help_Center/HelpCenter_operating-manual.pdf)

##### What is the operating temperature range, and do Resense force/torque sensors offer temperature compensation?

Resense force/torque sensors are temperature-compensated within the range of 0–50 °C. This is also the operating temperature range.

##### What happens if the Resense force/torque sensor exceeds its force limit?

Each sensor has a nominal measurement range and an overload capacity of approx. 300 %. Beyond this point, irreversible deformation occurs, and the output can no longer be guaranteed within our specifications.

Note: This applies also to transient forces. There is no mechanical protection against overload. Overload events can be checked via the diagnostics of the Mini-Electronics. If you suspect an overload, please contact your sales representative for further steps.

##### Are Resense force/torque sensors dust- and waterproof?

The current F/T sensor has an IP20 rating, meaning it is not dust- or waterproof. We are actively working on encapsulation solutions to provide higher protection levels in future versions. If your application requires a specific IP rating, please consult your sales contact for available options and timelines.

##### Which interfaces are supported by Resense force/torque sensors?

Resense sensors support USB, UART, and optional EtherCAT connectivity for straightforward integration into research and industrial environments.

We also partner with Olive Robotics to enable seamless ROS 2 integration, providing low-latency data communication and plug-and-play usability for robotic applications.

##### What is the format and protocol of the evaluation electronics output data of Resense force/torque sensors?

Data is provided via serial communication. You can access it through USB or UART. We also provide C++ scripts and Python utilities for direct data access, included in the sensor kit.

[See some Reference Data here](#c44934)

##### What kind of adapter parts should be used for integrating Resense force/torque sensors?

We recommend using metal adapter parts when interfacing with the top and bottom platforms to ensure better signal quality.

3D-printed parts can be used initially, but please note: 3D-printed parts, especially those made from materials like PLA or ABS, are less stiff and can deform or creep over time. This may lead to measurement errors, signal noise, and even a small offset on the Z-axis. While the tare function can partially compensate, there remains a risk that values will drift under prolonged load or temperature changes.

If using the screws provided, the adapter part should ideally be thicker than 1.5 mm.

Please read the operating manual for further instructions.

##### Are you able to manage a yearly calibration for Resense force/torque sensors?

We calibrate the sensors end-of-line. Additionally, we can provide yearly calibration based on our quality standards, [contact us](https://www.resense.io/en-en/contact)!

##### How is the power supplied for Resense force/torque sensors?

The sensor is powered via the electronics box, which operates at 5 V. The sensor itself runs at 3.3 V, supplied by the electronics.

A micro-USB cable connects the electronics box to the PC COM port for power and communication.

##### What do I do if the signal of Resense F/T sensors appears to "float"?

Grounding Check: If the signal appears to “float” rather than drift, this can indicate a grounding issue.
Is the sensor connected to a laptop or a desktop PC? - If using a laptop, please ensure it is connected to its charger to provide proper grounding.

If you need further instructions, please [contact us](https://www.resense.io/en-en/contact).
